The U.S. Postal Service and the members of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee have set basic criteria for determining eligibility of subjects for commemoration on U.S. stamps. Unlike many other countries around the world no living person may be honored on a stamp and one must generally be dead ten years before becoming eligible for the honor. Exceptions include U.S. presidents who are honored on their birthday in the year following their passing. There has been some talk recently of loosening the requirements to more rapidly honor civil rights activist Rosa Parks who passed away October 24, 2005 but it is still under discussion.
Surprising to me, the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee receives over 50,000 stamp proposals from the public each year, making your participation in the Clyde Tombaugh stamp peititon even more helpful in trying to make our case be noticed.
Dr. Tombaugh becomes eligible for stamp consideration on February 4, 2007 and I will work hard this year to acquire letters of support for a stamp from significant members in government and in the scientific community.
